Fevered Hearts by Em Petrova

When faced with a challenge, it’s best to pool your resources.
Liam Mattson used to play his wife’s body like a fine violin. Until a logging accident dampened his fine motor skills and rendered his legs—and the most important part of his below-the-waist playground—useless.

If only Liam would throw himself into therapy with the same vigor he used to throw her into bed, Ivy is sure he’d fully recover. But lately she’s felt adrift, while he’s stuck in self-pity and pre-occupation with a serious threat to his logging business.

When Ward Bose returns from the backwoods, Liam isn’t blind to the heated, guilty glances between his best friend and his wife. And he takes a step he never could have taken if his legs were working—ask Ward to service Ivy in bed.

The moment the three come together, Ward’s heartstrings are tied in knots, and Liam holds them in his fist. But secrets they’re each keeping could tear them all apart…unless they can find a way to share their burdens as easily as they share their love.

Warning: Men who wield big saws know how to care of business—in bed and out.

Wow! Fevered Hearts was really freaking good. I already knew that Ms. Petrova could write unbelievably hot ménage romances as I have read several of them. What I did not know was how good she was at writing romantic suspense. And she is GOOOOOOD!

I loved that the book opened with Ward seeing Ivy for the first time and experiencing an immediate attraction for her before knowing who she was. Their natural sexual attraction actually went a long way in cementing the realism of the arrangement Liam proposes and the eventual relationship they all enter into because it showed that Ward wanted Ivy for Ivy and not just because of Liam and the history the two men shared. But it’s that history that makes it possible for Liam to ask Ward to help him show his wife that she is beautiful and sexy and important. Liam not only trusted Ward with Ivy, but he also trusted Ward with his pride and his heart. After the initial shock, it was their mutual trust that made the relationship possible – Ivy trusted Liam to have her best interest in heart when inviting Ward into their relationship, Ward trusted Liam not to let his presence interfere with Liam and Ivy’s marriage, and Liam trusted Ivy to fall in love with Ward and still love him – oh yeah, our boy Liam had a long-term plan whether he realized it or not. There were so many places for jealousy to emerge and ruin the budding relationship, yet it did not. Liam could have easily become resentful of Ward’s physical abilities and that Ward could please Ivy in ways he no longer could, but he didn’t; instead he used the visions of Ivy and Ward as motivation to commit to his physical rehab so that he could join the two people he loved the most and make theirs a true ménage relationship. No matter when the couplings occurred, each and every sex scene in the book was HAWT!!! It didn’t matter what the combination was either – MF, MFM, or MMF – they were all scorchingly hot.

As if the relationship development and super-hot sex scenes were not enough, Ms. Petrova weaves it all within a rather gripping romantic suspense plot. Initially, the trouble that Liam’s family is having with environmentalists seems to be par for the course in the life of an owner of a logging company, especially with the recent bad press they suffered when the company contracted to replant after an area was harvested failed to fulfill their contract and disappeared with their money. But as the story progresses, things begin to heat up as property is vandalized and death threats are made. What I enjoyed about the suspense element is that I learned the facts at the same time the characters did, so while I knew something was going on, I was no more aware of who the culprit was than they were. This ratcheted up the suspense and made the reveal that much more shocking. I loved Fevered Hearts and am excited to add yet another Em Petrova novel to my re-read shelf.

I’ve been a fan of Ms. Carr since I started reading her books.  With this series, I loved the first book, Melting Into You, with a passion!  And when I found out that this book was going to be a continuation onto that series, I couldn’t wait to start it.

I did love the ménage aspect that Ms. Carr added, and I thought the way that she did it was just great.  It was full of drama and suspense, to the point where I was left wondering what was going to happen next.

I felt like the characters were all written very well also, and they each had their own personalities and strengths and weaknesses.  Overall, they all seemed to work quite well together.

***Slight spoiler***  (If you want to read the spoiler, just highlight the white blocks below!)

The reason why I can’t give this a 5 star rating is because at the end of the book when they decide they are going to try to make a ménage relationship work, and the group sex scene, it was like Aubrey was an afterthought.  The scene was mostly focused on Josh and Kristoff’s interaction, and I honestly forgot that Aubrey was part of it.

**Slight spoiler over**

Despite all of that, I would still be interested in reading further into the series and to see where Ms. Carr goes with it!

I absolutely love a story with a strong alpha male. This one had two and WOWZA! It was amazing! Zander is a Rock God and bi. Chase is engaged to Danni and madly in love with her. They have a very spicy sex life and have even invited her friend to play. When Danni walk in on Chase watching mm porn, she doesn’t know what to think. She encourages him to explore his feelings while she is away.

Zander is a Rock Star, but in real life he likes to go by Alex. Alex has been hurt by both men and women and is looking for a chance to relax. He rents the main house of the property that Chase manages and sparks instantly fly between the two men.

Alex helps Chase explore his attraction to men, but neither of them expected to fall for the other. Where does that leave Danni? Chase wants both of them and suggests they enter into a Tri, like the one Alex was in before he got hurt.

I won’t give the ending away, but the chemistry between Alex and Chase could steam up my Kindle screen! Chase and Danni were equally intense, as were the three of them. I will say that my only issue with this story was Danni. She encouraged Chase to explore his feelings and then got mad when he did. Her “issues” were all over the place and irritated me. I love the HEA ending, but did not like the character of Danni at all!

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22879742-claiming-her-temporary-men
Ms. Ryles takes us back to Grand Oak Springs, Arizona in Claiming Her Temporary Men. This time around, brothers Ryder and Chase get a second chance at happiness when they enter into a one-month fling with a visitor to their small town, Emma Daniels. Recently divorced, Emma has no intention of entering into a relationship with another man, let alone two men. But that doesn’t mean she’s not open to a month of no-strings-attached ménage sex, especially when the brothers offer to teach her about domination and submission – a secret desire sparked by her reading of erotic novels.

I found Claiming Her Temporary Men to be more believable and, hence, more enjoyable than the first book in the series. Perhaps because none of the three involved were looking for love and were, in fact, opposed to it, there were no immediate declarations of love. Even though the characters began to admit to themselves that their feelings might be entering love territory after two-weeks, there were no outward declarations. Being as Emma had only planned to spend a month in Grand Oak Springs, the trio spent as much time together as possible and as they were together daily and spent that time getting to know one another in and out of bed, the progression of their feelings for one another felt right rather than rushed. With the way that events unfolded in the book, the timing of their declarations of love felt appropriate given the situation.

I saw a definite improvement in the author’s writing style from Second Chance at Love to this book and I did not notice nearly as many occurrences of a word being used incorrectly as I did in book one. Ms. Ryles also struck a much more enjoyable balance between the romance, freaking hot sex, and suspense elements this time around. I found myself more invested in Emma’s story than I was in Kylie’s (with far less eye-rolling occurring on my part). I also liked that when Emma informed Chase and Ryder that her knowledge of D/s was based strictly on her reading of erotic novels, they seemed to exercise more patience and provide guidance to her than I often see in similar novels. Claiming Her Temporary Men was an enjoyable read for me and I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series, Finding Holland.

Have you ever started a book and felt like you were starting in the middle of something?  That was the case with me and this book.  It started off with a huge bang, but I just couldn’t stop feeling like there was so much that I was missing, and it threw me off for the first few chapters.

Now, even with taking that into consideration, I have to say that I did still enjoy the story.  I haven’t actually read a lot of MMM books, but I was pleased with how this one played out.  I thought it had a great balance between sexy-times and action.  Which kept the story going for me personally.  I also feel like Ms. LaRocca did a great job at making all of the characters completely different, yet they were still able to work together as a trio. That did make that part of the story more believable for me personally.

Overall, I did enjoy this book and I will be sure to look for more in the series in the future!

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22464263-second-chance-at-love
Second Chance of Love was an easy read introducing us to the town and residents of Grand Oak Springs, Arizona. Kylie finds herself in the small town after her sudden escape from her abusive boyfriend while they were at a rest stop during their cross country move. Because she is in fear for her life should her ex find her, Kylie is looking for a short-term job and cheap place to stay so she can save up some money and keep moving to stay a step ahead of him. Needless to say, a relationship with a man is the last thing she is looking for and a relationship with two men is not even on her radar. Yep, that’s right – Grand Oak Springs is a community where many of the residents engage in polyamorous relationships.

Despite the instant attraction Kylie felt to Trent and to Jaxson, she brushes off their attempts to date for a month. Now a month might not sound like a long time, but the Andrews twins were relentless in their pursuit and stopped in for at least one meal a day at the diner Kylie worked, often at separate times. When she finally agrees to go to dinner with them, they are complete gentlemen despite the dinner being at their home where they could have easily taken advantage of the situation. This is one of the things I liked most about the book – the characters took their time to get to know one another instead of jumping straight into bed. While the author did not feel it necessary to bore us with each and every encounter that occurred between Kylie and the twins during their courtship, that they occurred as clear. And even when the sexy fun times finally began, the sexual activities progressed gradually with the initial encounters being some seriously hot foreplay, to sex with each brother individually (often with the other twin present), until finally they progressed to the full-on ménage sex scenes. Oh yeah, they were hot too!

While I enjoyed the action elements that were included via the situation with Kylie’s ex, I felt they played out a little too quickly to really be considered romantic suspense. That said, the resolution to the situation with Kylie’s ex was extremely satisfying, especially considering what she endured at his hands. I did find the author’s use of the third person mutli-POV writing style a tad off-putting, but mainly because she frequently backtracked in a scene to show us what one or both of the other main characters were thinking. Having scenes repeated was a bit disruptive to the flow of the story and while I generally enjoy getting the other characters’ points of view, in this case it took away from the story more than it added. That said, I am looking forward to reading the next book in the Grand Oaks Springs series to find out what’s in store for the deputies, Ryder and Chase.

P.S. – I don’t tend to comment on a book’s editing because unless I purchased it myself, I’m rarely sure if the review copy is the final version or an unedited copy. In the case of Second Chance Love, I feel I should note that I do hope that it is indeed an unedited copy because there are several places where an incorrect word was used and altered the meaning of a sentence. The occurrences were not enough to interfere with the storyline; however, there were several times where I found myself laughing at the resulting sentence. I only mention this because those readers who are sticklers for grammar will likely not be happy if the final version does contain such word misuses.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/24374480-eternal-brand?ac=1
I absolutely loved this book. Not only does Eternal Brand feature my favorite type of ménage – MFM in which the men are bisexual – but it included just the right amount of the ABCs of romance (angst, brokenness, and conflict). Add to that some of the hottest ménage sex I’ve read in a while in every combination (MF, MM, MMF, MFM) and it being set in Australia, well it’s no wonder this one went straight to my reread shelf.

Brand is the primary male hero in this book and by that I mean that he is the reason that Jet meets Emily. Brand did not have a good childhood and while there are allusions made to it throughout the book, we don’t learn until near the end of the book what it was that happened that broke his spirit and made him feel unworthy of love, much less the love of two people. And while Brand’s past is heartbreaking, it’s made worse by the PTSD he suffers from serving in the military. All of this makes for a man who does his best to avoid relationships, but he never expected to encounter the likes of Emily. Although we meet Emily and Brand two years into their relationship, her love for the man is apparent even though she knows almost nothing about his past. Emily is happy with Brand and avoids broaching subjects that she fears will send him running, which is quite insightful on her part considering she doesn’t actually know that it’s Brand’s MO to run when faced with too much emotion. When Jet arrives, Emily not only learns more about Brand’s past, she also learns that he has been keeping a big secret from her and when she walks in on Brand and Jet kissing, she’s not sure which emotion to focus on – betrayal, anger, or arousal. Thank goodness arousal won out in the long run and the three embark on an obstacle and pitfall rich journey to forming a long-term triad relationship.

One of the (many) things I liked about this book was that each character learned more about themselves as the learned about each other. As expected, Brand’s journey to self-realization was the most complex and pivotal to the relationship. While Emily and Jet’s love for him helped immensely, it didn’t prevent things from falling apart and was actually the catalyst for Brand running… again. Fortunately fate intervened and Brand ended up getting the advice and sense of purpose he needed from an unlikely but influential front – a Vietnam vet. Jet’s self-realization was a bit more subtle as he came to understand that he too was running from Brand as he used his job to run from the devastation Brand’s rejections caused in him. It took Jet falling for Emily and the home and family the ménage relationship offered that led to his awareness. As for Emily, the woman found the backbone she had put away during her two years with Brand and she made Brand and Jet prove to her that they were serious about a future together before she was willing to consider giving them another chance. One loving woman + two sexy-as-sin men + tons of hot sex = one stellar novel that I am already looking forward to reading again.
