Play by Kylie Scott

Mal Ericson, drummer for the world famous rock band Stage Dive, needs to clean up his image fast—at least for a little while. Having a good girl on his arm should do the job just fine. Mal doesn’t plan on this temporary fix becoming permanent, but he didn’t count on finding the one right girl. Anne Rollins never thought she’d ever meet the rock god who plastered her teenage bedroom walls—especially not under these circumstances. Anne has money problems. Big ones. But being paid to play the pretend girlfriend to a wild life-of-the-party drummer couldn’t end well. No matter how hot he is. Or could it?

After I finished reading Lick I had to, I mean HAD to read, Play. I desperately had to know whom Mal was going to end up with and how that romance was going to go down.

Malcolm ‘Mal’ Erickson is the drummer for the rock band Stage Dive. He’s eccentric, fun, over the top, loyal, kind, super sexy, sweet and has a wicked sense of humor. He always has a sharp sarcastic comeback even during the most inappropriate moments usually moments he makes inappropriate with his sarcastic comments. I fell head over heels for Mal in the first book. Oh Mal, my Mal, okay he’s not mine but a girl can pretend, right?

Mal is the fun guy in the band who keeps things light especially when things are getting heavy but something is up with Mal. He seems lost and he’s pulling away from the rest of the band especially from his best friend David.

Mal is happy that his best friend and band mate David has found love and stability. Ev is a great woman and he adores her but as happy as he is for David and Evelyn, he’s finding it hard to celebrate and keep up with pretenses. Mal has something he’s hiding from the band, and he’s not willing to tell anyone because voicing it will only make it real and it’s a heartbreaking reality he wishes he didn’t have to deal with.

Mal decides it’s time to clean up his life and change his public image. He’s determined to make these changes and all he needs is someone to play along with him and when he meets Anne at a party he thinks he’s found the perfect playmate.

“Life’s a song, Anne. Let’s play.”

Anne’s lives in the apartment across from Lauren and Nate, Evelyn’s best friend and brother. Anne hasn’t had the best life but she’s works hard to make things better for the sake of her younger sister. She’s like Mal, loyal to her friends and loving but unlike Mal, Anne is far more serious, likes to spend her time reading, has a dry sense of humor and tends to let the people around her use her. Her roommate has skipped out on her leaving her financially high and dry and her boss/close friend who she’s crushing on hard is stringing her along. Mal sees an opportunity to help Anne learn how to just say no while helping him improve his public image.

He proposes the brilliant idea that the two will have a fake relationship. They will simply be friends with no benefits but to the public eye they will be madly in love.  He quickly, without discussing things with Anne, moves himself in to her apartment. Anne is flustered by Mal’s crazy hijinks but she needs the money and well she is getting the chance to pretend that her teenage crush is her boyfriend.

"We are going to be the best fake couple ever, pumpkin.”

I adored reading Mal and Anne’s road from fake couple to head over heels romance. If you love witty banter, sexual tension and sweet romance this is your book. I could have just read the back and forth text messages between Mal and Anne for a full chapter and been happy.

Mal: Ben’s coming over to play Halo
Anne: Great! But you don’t have to tell me everything you do, Mal.
Mal: Davie says communication’s important

Mal: When are you on the rag? Davie said to find out if you want cupcakes or ice cream
Anne: I want to not talk about this ever
