“You
say I’ll never own you. If I win—you willingly give me that right. You
sign not only the debt agreement, but another—one that makes me your
master until your last breath is taken. You do that, and I’ll give you
this.”
Nila Weaver’s family is indebted. Stolen, taken, and bound not by monsters but by an agreement written over six hundred years ago, she has no way out.
She belongs to Jethro as much as she denies it.
Jethro Hawk’s patience is running out. His inheritance gift tests, challenges, and surprises him—and not in good ways. He hasn’t leashed her but he thinks he might’ve found a way to bind her forever.
Debts are mounting. Payment waiting.

OH! MY! GOD! I am gobsmacked! I am
practically speechless. I don’t know where to begin. So many questions. So few
answers, but the answers given just lead to more questions. And that ending,
that glorious effing ending that I never saw coming. I didn’t suspect. It
wasn’t even on my freaking radar. Worst part is that with the way this series
builds upon itself, I can’t talk about any flipping specifics without treading
on a spoiler!
What I can say: Nila is coming into
her own identity. She is no longer the dutiful daughter. She is a woman and she
is her own woman, contract be damned! As for Jethro, his complexities are
growing at a monumental rate. I cannot wait to find out what his secrets are,
including the one he shares with Kestrel. But the chemistry we saw flickering
between Nila and Jethro in Debt
Inheritance had nothing on the inferno that blazed between them in First Debt. These two push one another’s
buttons so thoroughly that I’m waiting for the nuclear fallout.
As the title would suggest, the First Debt was collected and it was an
extremely intense scene. Not only was Nila horrified to learn what her
ancestors did to the Hawks hundreds of years ago, she could understand why
revenge was sought – even as she feels that she and Jethro are too many
generations removed to take part in this farce. Her silent vow to be the Weaver
who ends the cycle is a noble one and I cannot wait to see how the story plays
out in Second Debt. Well done Ms.
Winters, well done.
After reading the first book in this series I felt let down
but I held on to the hope that this would pick up and become as intense and
explosive of a series that I had come to expect from Pepper Winters. I am
glad I didn’t give up because she did bring more to the First Debt. It
was similar to other books that I had read in this genre but she added some of
the Pepper we have grown to love, especially with the emotional power struggle
between the two lead characters.
Nila has found her strength and she is slowly becoming the
master of manipulation when it comes to Jethro. She can send him into
mental chaos within minutes of being in the same room with her. This
doesn’t mean she is the one with the power though, it just means she is
probably the only one on Earth that can find his weaknesses and use them
against him. She is confronted with the first debt and some history that
lead up to the tradition that has destroyed her family for years in the
past. I really am beginning to love this character, she is real.
She breaks down yet never forgets to pick herself back up and formulate a new
plan. She is determined to find a way out of this, if her heart and
stubbornness doesn’t kill her first.
Jethro knows of her power and the affect it has over
him. He struggles in this book to stay in the role of the family and
battle against what his heart and logic desires. The author has actually
made me feel bad for him. I might possibly even learn to like him. It is
clear now that he doesn’t fully believe in the practice and traditions that he
has to fulfill to gain the power of the family run organization but I am still
left wondering which direction his limited amount of strength will take
him. We learned more about his family as we were introduced to new members,
along with the journal from Nila’s family members who were taken before.
I loved the way the author is showing us that both are
trapped by expectations from their families, especially their fathers.
While one has found the courage to change their paths, the other struggles. I
can hardly wait to see if they ever get over their pride and fight for survival
to become the couple I can see they are meant to be. I am sure we have a
long way to go before we will find the outcome and I am not sold it is going to
be a happily ever after either. I love the intensity of the unknown
here. The mystery of Kite is also explained in this book and that alone
is going to lead to some major drama.
The biggest complaint I had for this book is the excessive
amount of details and internal talk among the characters. It felt like
the story lagged and slowed down when each would be constantly talking to
themselves over and over. I understand why she wrote it this way though,
we are still very early in their story and we need to understand the motive
behind their actions but I would have enjoyed more interaction between the two
characters. I can hardly wait to see what the second debt is and more of
the history of Hawks versus Weavers.
And, if I was honest, they’d transformed
me into the same kind of creature. Someone who had evolved from a single
dimension and now lived with so many avenues of personalities.
I was still the quiet, vertigo-stricken
girl from London, but I was also the woman who liked being tormented, who thrived on a fight, and who thirsted for
sex.
And that stupefied me.
