Tryad by Cynthia Kimball

Kaylee thought learning energy work was fun, especially as it got her from here to there with barely a thought.

Back from energy camp for her junior year in high school, her carefree use of energy is noted by two new teenagers in town: Heath and Vane.

Annoyed at and attracted to them at the same time, she doesn't expect to find out the three of them are part of a Tryad. When all three energies combine, nothing can stop them from doing anything they want.

The more the three of them interact, the more intense their energy.

When a man intent on controlling them attacks, they flee to train together.

Until he kidnaps Kaylee’s parents…

With no time to prepare, Heath, Vane, and Kaylee must face this man and try to rescue her parents before it’s too late.

Kaylee’s life is about as normal as you can get if you discount the fact that she can transport herself from one place to another with a thought and she’s sort of dating two guys, twin brothers to be exact.

The summer is winding down and Kaylee is spending her last few weeks before school starts working on the energy lessons she learned at Energy Camp, memorizing the map to the new school she’s starting and picking out the perfect outfits for the first week of school. Her close friends have moved away and this year she’ll be starting her Junior Year at a brand new school. It’s going to be nerve wracking and Kaylee has a lot on her mind so the last thing she wants to do is listen to her mom press her about joining the church youth group and pushing her to make friends with the new neighbors son Heath who her mother insists is a nice boy. Mom code for I’ve deemed him acceptable dating material, which isn’t exactly the endorsement a teenage girl wants to hear concerning a boy.

When Kaylee meets Heath she realizes that this school year isn’t going to be as boring and lonely as she thought. There is more to this boy than meets the eye. He may seem annoying and pushy but             Kaylee is compelled to get to know him and his twin brother Vane. They both seem to be hiding something and Kaylee suspects that the two know about her energy abilities but she’s not sure if she can trust them just yet. As she spends more time around the twins she finds herself feeling safe around them and connected to their energy. When the three are together they become a powerful force and that force of energy has an evil mastermind after them, intent on controlling them.

Tryad was an interesting read. The storyline mixes realistic with unusual. It takes the normal everyday teenagers life filled with angst, homework and rushing from class to class and throws into world with people who can read energy and who have the ability to harness energy in incredible ways. The characters are likeable especially the twins. There’s a great deal of mystery going on and the book sets up the beginning of what seems to be a complicated storyline concerning energy users, good guys who use it for positive purposes and bad guys set out on using the Tryad’s power for nefarious purposes. What those nefarious purposes are is yet to be seen but it will be fascinating to find out more about the people behind those plans, what the plans are and if the Tryad can stand against them.

It will also be amusing to read how things are going to play out with the Tryad as they live together, train and become closer. Things are bound to get complicated considering you have two brothers falling in love with one girl. I imagine at some point jealously is going to rear its ugly head and affect the three negatively. We are talking about hormonal teenagers and two young men with zero experience with relationships. Throw Kaylee’s mom into the mix and it’s bound to be awkward.
