Falling Stars, By Charles Sheehan-Miles

Crank Wilson and Julia Thompson love each other madly. But after Crank’s huge mistake during the summer, on the road with Crank’s rock band Morbid Obesity, they aren’t getting along.

Sean Wilson and Carrie Thompson are the seventeen year old younger siblings of Julia and Crank. Carrie is on her way to New York to start college at Columbia University and Sean is on his way home to Boston. For the next five days, they’re stuck in a car. Along the way, they’ll contend with screaming matches, giant spiders and a 240-pound pissed off Marine.

And the whole way, Crank will be faced with one question. After he screwed up so badly, is there any way he can win Julia back?

I don’t know how Charles Sheehan-Miles does it, but every time I read a book by him I read the last page and feel like breaking out into a rendition of “Here Comes the Sun” by the Beatles.  His books always just make me feel…good.  Even if I’m ending it with swollen eyes and a runny nose, and may have had my heart ripped out, it’s still worth it.  Every. Single. Time.  I’m a fangirl.
“A Song for Julia” is my favorite book in the Thompson Sister’s Series (so far), so I was so excited to be able to spend more time with Crank and Julia in “Falling Stars”.  In this book, we join Crank and Julia, and their younger siblings Sean and Carrie, on a cross country road trip.  This book is both hilarious and moving.  It reminded me why I feel in love with Crank and Julia in the first place.  Crank is imperfect and impulsive and a little stupid, but that’s just so quintessentially Crank and that just makes him…perfect.  He loves Julia so much; you just can’t help but to love him for the depth of what he feels.  Julia is, as ever, the voice of reason.  But, you see her having to work past some of her own demons.  And we all know with Julia, she runs deep. This is the continuation of a story of two people who are trying to overcome their pasts in order to have a future together, and it’s transcendent.  Also, I friggin’ love Sean…some of the best moments in the book were from him.
As always, this book is impeccably written and seamlessly put together.  He manages to simultaneously warm your heart and break it at the same time, which I find both perplexing and enjoyable.  He’s the master, that’s really all there is to it.
If you’ve enjoyed the other Thompson Sister’s books, then this is a must read for you.  You will not be disappointed. If you haven’t read them, then what are you waiting for?  You will never be the same again, as his books may just ruin you for other books.  They’re that good.  A very enthusiastic 5 stars from me.
