His Risk to Take, By Tessa Bailey

The greater the risk, the hotter the reward…

Homicide cop Troy Bennett had a reputation with the Chicago PD for being fearless and in control—until the night his daredevil partner is killed during a raid. From that moment on, he swears he’ll never again be responsible for the loss of a loved one. To escape his demons, Troy transfers to the NYPD, bringing him up close and personal with Ruby Elliott, a beautiful, street-savvy pool hustler.

Reckless and stubbornly independent, Ruby embodies everything Troy’s avoiding, but when she walks into the pub he’s at with his new coworkers and blows his carefully laid plans to hell, Troy knows he has to have her—risks be damned. But there’s a connection between Ruby’s shadowed past and a case Troy’s working involving a notorious Brooklyn felon, throwing her safety into jeopardy. Confronted with his biggest fear, will Troy push Ruby away to keep her safe or fight to keep her in his arms where she belongs?

I love the opposites attract books, and this is one of the better ones that I have read this year so far!  Tessa was able to take an “old story type” and change it to a way that fits into way the world is now.  When it came to Ruby’s character, Tessa was able to incorporate the wild and reckless aspect of her personality, along with the caring and compassion part as well.  You could almost feel Ruby’s concern when it came to those who mattered to her.
Troy’s character was very upfront right from the beginning, and you could tell his concern for Ruby’s safety.  The ability to show that he can be upfront and demanding, yet still be concerned for safety was well shown.
My only complaint about this book was that I didn’t want it to end when it did.  It was almost as though parts of the story were rushed, when they could have actually been drawn out.  But with that being said, this is the first book by Tessa that I have read, but I will be sure to check out her writings in the future!
