Steffie Dawn Spotlight!!!

This week's Spotlight is for:

(insert drum roll here)

Steffie Dawn!!

Author of the
A Week with My Romanian Series

What was your life like before becoming an author?
Pretty boring in many senses, I worked in customer services and on a checkout in a supermarket and life was quite grim, the only exciting part was hanging out with great friends and talking about books, sex and how they both work really well together!

What sparked the idea for your novel?
A combination of things, it’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of Red Phoenix who inspired me to write this particular series however the spark and idea for Ella’s story came from a very dear friend of mine…. That’s all I’m willing to confess!

How personal is your writing?
Very. In many senses too so it depends what you mean by personal. Is the story real? No it’s a load of bullshit, it’s fiction, but I’ve not denied that there are elements of truth in the story, I just won’t confess what’s true and what’s not! That’s my secret! If you mean the physical act of writing, well that’s very personal, I take the journey with my characters and my readers. I do what I can to interact with my fans in every way and my characters are so real to me, they’re a part of me even though they don’t exist, not quite imaginary friends but my characters are like my siblings, my best friends, my worst enemies, my parents, all rolled into one.

Do you outline?
A little. I mean I know what the start of my story is and what the end goal is and I always have loads of ideas of what will fit in between but nine times out of ten, I’ll start with an idea and it will grow, change and develop on its own as I write.

Which comes first? The character's story or the idea for the novel?
Most of the time it’s the story, not with Ella for other reasons that only some people know! But the story usually comes first. I have a story planned right now due for release in November to raise money for help for heroes, it’s planned and outlined in my mind but my characters are still nameless! I call them Mary and Joseph at the moment but I can promise you those will change!!!

What advice do you have for someone who would like to become a published writer?
Write. Just write and don’t stop, no idea is a bad idea. Put your fingers to the keyboard or pen to paper and write, the style and so on will develop the more you write. It’s no secret I started writing fan fiction and wrote a novel at 16 I read my work from then and I’m embarrassed to call it my own, it has no style, no fluidity, grammar is terrible but the story is there everything else developed in time.
This is a line from one of my fanfictions, both characters are detectives. “"You're right, you should be a Detective." She winked as he laughed gently.” HOW CHEESY CAN YOU GET? And believe me when I say there are worse, far worse!

How do you react to a bad review of one of your books?
Depends what you mean by bad! Negative with constructive criticism, I take it on board an aim to better myself as an author. Bad as in bitchy and horrible, shrug it off. I had one reviewer who came from fanfic who didn’t like me very much, she used the name “bev” that isn’t her, she reviewed my first book before it was out and said something along the lines of this. “The synopsis leaves a lot to be desired…” well uh isn’t that the point of a synopsis? I think she meant “Leaves a little to be desired.” Shows the intellectual level right? Well it gets worse. “Lack of proper grammar.” Proper grammar? You can’t get more wrong than saying proper grammar!!! The term is incorrect grammar, not proper grammar! So yeah, I just joke and brush them off, there’s no point taking things to heart, I’ve seen authors discontinue their books because of cruel reviewers and these are talented writers with hundreds if not thousands of fans, I strongly believe you need thick skin to put your work out there to be judged.

Do you like your handwriting?
Ha! No!!! I sent out some signed autographed postcards and they were terrible, my handwriting is like that of a five year old!

Where does your family live?
In a little house on a council estate in Bangor, North Wales. My big sister lives two doors down.

How many brothers and sisters do you have?
Biologically One big sister and two little brothers. Technically 1 big sister, 2 little sisters and 2 little brothers. My best friends daughters and I are like sisters, one even gave me a necklace saying “big sister” to prove it! (Also she didn’t realize that giving me this necklace was giving me license to treat her like a little sister… yeah I’m sure anyone who isn’t an only child can figure that one out!) ps. She’s 16!

What genre of books do you like to read? do you limit yourself to only the genre that you write yourself?
Uh nope, well… I write YA under the name S.D. Light, erotica and romance under Steffie Dawn, that’s pretty much what I read I love Jacqueline Wilson who writes YA and childrens books, I’m a huge fan of Philip Pullman who’s books are… fantasy? Maybe? Uh everything else I read right now are typically erotic romance books but that’s just because of the circles I’m in as an author they’re the books I have most access too I guess, they’re what I see popping up as freebies, they’re the authors I’ve become friends with and follow on twitter and facebook and their books are always there.

Is there any particular author or book that influenced you in any way either growing up or as an adult?
Jacqueline Wilson’s books taught me so much, about growing up, being a teenager, being a daughter and a sister. Her book Vicky Angel prepared me to understand death and dying. She’s a very influential and inspirational author and I recommend all girls age 7+ give her books a try.

What is one question that you are never asked in interviews?
Uhhh… I don’t think many interviewers ask about my relationships and sex life… that’s all I can think of… in saying that I don’t think many people want to know and even though I’m quite open and honest and will embarrass my best friends by shouting “butt plug and anal beads” across TGI’s and Costa there’s a lot I probably wouldn’t admit to when the question came round… oh no one has ever asked me about my sex toy collection either ;)

What book are you reading now?
Currently I’m reading Entwined with You by Sylvia Day, I’m proof reading a book called Claiming Celyse by Sapphire Kande, also a book by Lulu Astor, I just don’t have much time to read right now, one of these is being read on kindle, other on cell phone, other on laptop!

Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?
Sapphire Kande for sure, I recommend her book Molly’s Curse, it isn’t quite perfect but it’s a great story with amazing potential.

What is one question that you are always asked in interviews?
I think a couple of people have asked me about my favourite writing snacks. It’s diet coke and chocolate cookies and if I ever write an autobiography that’s what it will be called “Diet Coke and Chocolate Chip Cookies by Steffie Dawn.” Catchy title right?

Can you share a little of your current work with us?
Hmmm… this is tricky because I left the last book on one giant cliffhanger and I don’t want to spoil it! Hold on *Goes looking through for a nice juice quote*

FOUND ONE! (that doesn’t compromise the cliffhanger!)

With Master gone I’m free to do as I please in his home, ranging from putting clothes on to pigging out in front of the TV.  However I don’t know what to do or where to begin.  In all honesty, I sort of feel like I’m trespassing.  When he’s here, he’s in control of most of my movements, his presence commands my behaviour without him having to say a single word.
Without him here I feel a little lost…

If you could visit any place in the world, where would you choose to go and why?
Bucharest Romania, I’ve spent months of my life and many more to come writing about this place and I’ve never been there. Also there’s someone I know there who I’d love to meet in person!

Can I say two? Well technically three?
Mississippi and New Orleans to see my best friends Tashia and Kerry, I speak with them online and I was planning to go when I graduated school but having dropped out of university that plan fell through, I’d do anything to go visit them!

If you could eliminate one thing from your daily schedule, what would it be and why?
Sleep! It’s the most annoying human bodily function ever, 8-10 hours spent doing nothing? There’s not enough hours in the day to do everything I want to do and I have to waste time sleeping?! Ugh! *Rant over*

If you would wake up as the opposite gender, what is the first thing you would do?
Easy Pee. Then Wank… do people outside Britain use this term? I mean toss off, or masturbate to be clear. I’d love to know how that organ worked properly!

What does your room look like?
White walls with my book covers in huge A3 canvasses ( A gift from my best friend) my bed is like a giant purple and pink couch covered in scatter cushions. I have giant tiggers on it too, I love tigger! I have a Steffie Dawn cork board too which I put thing involved in my career on, like a scrapbook but on the wall.

What internet site do you surf to the most?
Porn? No I’m kidding! Though I would hate for anyone to go through my browser history with my novel research!! Facebook, I’m not a fan of twitter so facebook is linked to twitter so I don’t have to use both. I have pinterest but I don’t keep it up, don’t use tumblr or anything else.

If you were a professional wrestler, what would your ring name be and why?
This question is so funny to me because I used to wrestle! Yes ladies and gents Steffie Dawn used to train in wrestling! Also the name Steffie was not the name I was born with legally changed 2/3 years ago the name came from Stephanie the nickname given to me because of my resemblance to Stephanie McMahon from WWE when my hair was black and I was a total bitch with attitude!

What's the funniest prank ever played on you?
When I was about five my Mum shouted and told me my friend was at the back door, when I got there no one was there, I walked all the way towards my friend’s house thinking she’d got bored of waiting, turned out, she’d not been at the house at all. April fools day joke.

Choose a movie title for the story of your life.
The Great Depression… is that even a movie? I don’t really watch movies and that was a joke! LOL! Uh… let me browse google…we’ll go with Asylum simply because I know a few people who think I belong in one!

If you can be a Disney character, who would you be and why?
Ariel! She is my favourite! Also because I have red hair (not natural) and I love to sing along to the movie!

When people look at me, they would never guess that I:
Am a beauty queen… wait that’s a vain answer uh… dance, I’m the clumsiest person alive but I have very good qualifications for dance equivalent to the british A’level AAB grades.

What's your favorite song to sing in Karaoke? Why?
Queen Don’t stop me now! I love karaoke so I have list of them but this is one I’ll often do! It’s a well known song and puts everyone in a great mood!

You win a million dollars, but you have to give half to a charity. Which charity do you pick, and what do you do with the rest of the money?
Help for Heroes, the british charity who support wounded soldiers, the victims of war we don’t get to hear about. My Novel Holding on to Hope due for release November 2013 is in aid for Help for Heroes with all royalties for the first five years of sale going direct to H4H

If you were interviewing yourself, what are the top 3 questions you would ask yourself?
Can I answer them too? Joke!
How did you lose your virginity? (Seriously thought this would be a question that would come up!)
What was your first sexual encounter? (Everyone has a sexual encounter before they pop their cherry right?)
Have you ever done anal? (Couldn’t resist throwing that one in. The answer is no… but doesn’t mean I’m not willing :P )

Are you a person who makes their bed in the morning, or do you not see much point?
It depends if my room is tidy, if it is then yes I do my bed, if not what is the point?!

Be honest, how often do you wash your hair?
3-4 times a week but condition only once otherwise it needs washing like 10 times a week!

Do you go out of your way to kill bugs? Are there any that make you screech and hide?
No I don’t… well there’s a video of my on youtube killing two bugs it’s so random… but I don’t go out of my way to kill them, I like to photograph them. Giant spiders in the bath make me scream and call for daddy!

Why are manhole covers round?
"I'm British... do they call them that here?"

If you could trade places with any other person for a week, famous or not famous, living or dead, real or fictional. with whom would it be?
Ella. Seriously. Who wouldn’t want a week in Romania with a sexy kinky Dom? Hmmm yes please… or Brie from Red Phoenix’s series, Sir is just juicy!

If aliens landed in front of you and, in exchange for anything you desire, offered you any position on their planet, what would you want?
Sex Slave? LOL! Kidding! Uh… Can I just visit? I’m a home bird so Wales is where I wanna be!

If you won $20 million in the lottery, what would you do with the money?
Go to Romania for a week, go to Mississippi and New Orleans, buy my dream home which is .5 million in the middle of nowhere, then I’d give some to all the charities I support, put some away for savings, by my Mum and Dad a new home of their choosing, then… I don’t know, 20 million is way too much I wouldn’t know what to do with it all! Most importantly, start a charity similar to the American Joyful Heart Foundation here in the UK.

If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be?
Uhhh can I like be invisible? That would be so cool right? Then walk behind them and spank them without them even knowing you’re there! Ace, That’s the one, invisibility…. Can my superhero name be something kinky too? I’ll leave that for you to come up with!
