Sometimes it takes someone else to show us what we are truly capable of becoming.
Suffering from years of violent abuse, Ryan Campbell has learned how to keep people from getting too close. But when you shut yourself off, people get hurt along the way. Never caring much about others, Ryan creates a world in which he doesn’t have to feel.
When Ryan meets Candace Parker, all of his walls slowly begin to crumble. Not sure of the truth of who she is, he feels his mind is playing tricks on him. Unable to force out the thoughts that consume him, Ryan is haunted by visions that torment him every time he looks at her. He finds himself swallowed by guilt and blame, but he’s unwilling to turn his back on the one person that could possibly save him.
You’ve heard Candace’s story in Fading, now hear Ryan’s.

Well, this was an emotional book! I finished this book yesterday, but I have to
tell you that I still feel a bit unprepared to sit down and write this
review. There is so much to take in, and
so much to think about…it’s a whopper.
Falling tells the same story as Fading, but from Ryan’s
POV. Ryan is an abuse survivor, and he
has closed himself off to any kind of connection with people. He has lived through and seen some truly
horrifying things, so I understand where he’s coming from. The man just doesn’t want to put himself in a
position to feel anything at all. Until
he meets Candace. She takes his
carefully crafted existence and spins it on its head. Their relationship is full of a lot of guilt
and shame on his part (as you read, you’ll know why, but I don’t want to ruin
it here), but he fights through it to try and be there for the person that he
feels may truly be able to understand him.
So, I have to start with Ryan – he is one complicated
man! He’s got such a tortured past, but
when he meets Candace it’s like he can’t not fall in love with her. He is the epitome of every tortured soul book
boyfriend I have ever read about. He and Candace ultimately save one another,
though not without a lot of struggle and strife on Ryan’s part. There will be parts of this book where you
want to punch him, there will be parts of this book that will make you cry the
ugly cry…but I have to tell you, it’s absolutely worth it.
The cornerstone of this entire book is the fact that it’s
absolutely a well-crafted, well-written and superbly told tale. The themes of this book aren’t new; the
romance between the characters is nothing new either. But the passion and the language and just the
overall tone of the story is so fluid and encompassing that you can’t help but
love and appreciate it. And the ending
is about as perfect as any ending for any book I’ve ever read.
Bottom line, I’m not sure how anyone could give this book
less than 5 stars. It’s a journey, but
you can tell that it was painstakingly crafted and made by someone with passion
and talent for storytelling. Buy
it!
I drop my head in my
hands and let it out. It’s a haze of unrecognizable emotions beating through
me. To look past this and let her continue to sit and do nothing is something
that I don’t think I’m capable of. But Jase is right. My girl is so damn
fragile even though she’s so damn strong. It’s a paradox that’s hard to deal
with. She’s gonna break one way or another.
Irritation
boils inside, and the longer I sit here it starts to eat away at me until it
takes over and I stand up, kicking over the stool, screaming, and smashing my
glass against the brick wall behind the bar followed next by the bottle. The
blast of glass shattering and sprinkling to the floor is all I hear through the
ringing in my head. I grab my keys, leaving the mess, and head to my jeep.
I
drive. Making my way back to my loft and upstairs to find Candace standing in
my closet, slipping on a sweater.
“Why
didn’t you do anything?” I ask, unable to control my frustration.
She
turns to look at me, confused, when she asks, “What are you talking about?”
“Don’t
make me say it.”
“Ryan,
please. Don’t,” she says and then walks past me to sit on the edge of the bed.
“Who
is he?” I press, emotions getting the best of me.
She
keeps her chin tucked down. Avoiding.
“Candace, tell me his fuckin’ name!”
