Flesh-eating zombies, dirty sex, and a shattered past…
What’s more dangerous—the man who broke her heart or those trying to eat it?
Fighting to survive, Eve finds herself alone in the world after the Crave—the only parallel of her former life. On the hunt for her sister, she runs into Gage—the first and only boy to have her heart and break it. It’s been four years and he isn’t a boy anymore, nor is he the same person he used to be. Against her better judgment, Eve agrees to stay with him when he divulges information on a safe haven near the small town they grew up in—but that doesn’t mean she has to like it…
Returning home elicits a myriad of emotions that both Eve and Gage thought they had buried. The past and present collide and they are forced to the face bitter deceits that ruined them in the before and threaten to destroy them now…
I know that the whole zombie/post-apocalyptic world thing
has been done a lot lately, but it just never seems to get old to me. I love it!
And this book was a unique take on the zombie/end of the world as we
know it story.
Eve is at the end of her rope. She’s sick of fighting to survive, she’s sick
of hoping to find her sister, she’s just finished with the struggles of this
new, zombie filled world. So, on the
edge of giving up she is rescued…by Gage.
Gage is a boy that she had a terrible crush on in high school, 4 years
before this story takes place. He broke
her heart, and never really took responsibility for treating her heart so
carelessly. As far as Gage is concerned, he can’t believe that this girl is HIS
Eve. He convinces her to go with him and
they basically spend the rest of the novel fighting each other as well as the
walking undead.
Through a series of flashbacks, we learn about Eve’s life
pre-zombies. We learn about the
relationship she and Gage had before and how poorly she was treated by
basically everyone in her life. Eve as a
character was intriguing to me. She had
every reason in the world to give up, but she fights. I’m not sure many people would have the heart
to keep going like she did, minus her one down episode. I mean, the end of the world as you know it
is some depressing stuff. Gage
compliments her pretty well, too. We get
to read his perspective throughout the book as well, which made me happy. I’m not sure if we hadn’t had those insights that
I would have believed what Eve really meant to Gage. He comes off as a jerk, but he really went a
lot deeper than that. I was really
pulling for them to work it out throughout the book...they had to get together,
dammit!
Overall, I found this book entertaining but it seemed to
have something missing for me. I would
have liked to have known more about how the zombie apocalypse happened, how the
outbreak started. I guess that wasn’t
exactly central to the plot, but it would have gone a long way in setting some
of the tone and setting for the book, in my opinion. The plot was also a bit on the predictable
side, but I can forgive that because it was basically a well-written and well
thought out book. I think it’s something
that people who like this type of genre will really enjoy. It didn’t blow me away, but it was
entertaining. 3.5 stars.
