The only person poetry-loving Cali Monroe hates more than herself is Logan Waters, the geeky kid who lives in the dorm building next to hers.
Ever since Cali's parents told her she would amount to nothing, she has felt entirely inadequate. It seems like LM Augustine’s books always capture something
that is difficult to describe. They are
deep, they are penetrating and they suck you into their world for just a little
while. What a great book.
This is Cali’s story.
She a very unhappy person, but she plays the role she is expected to
play as one of the popular girls at school and letting everyone think she’s a
party girl who likes to hook up. When
Logan transfers to the same college as her, she takes it upon herself to find
ways to torture Logan, the resident nerd.
What you come to find out is that they’re both trying to escape from a
very difficult situation. Basically,
they claim to hate each other, when in reality they share a lot of pain from an
event that changed both of their lives. When
they’re set up on a blind date, it all starts to fall into place.
First of all, Logan is like the nerd of my dreams. Seriously, he is a hot nerd with a heart of
gold. And the poetry in this book? Oh…be still my beating heart. My husband once tried to write me a poem with
an ocean theme, but “sea sponge of love” just doesn’t have that romantic
connotation. This made me appreciate the
way that poetry was used in this book all the more. It was so great.
Cali…well, Cali kind of pissed me off. She was a total mean girl, but once you got
into the story and you found out all about her brother’s death and Ben’s role
in the whole ordeal, you begin to understand her a little more. I won’t say she was my favorite person even
by the end, but she was a very real character who hid a lot of pain, and I can
appreciate that. Logan hid pain too, but
in a much different way. Seeing them discover
each other, the real people they were behind everything, was really lovely. Heartfelt is a great way to describe their
love story. It was absolution for both
of them.
This was a really emotional story that I think will resonate
with a lot of people, I know it did with me.
I think it takes a lot of guts as an author to write a story centered
around grief, and to make something beautiful out of it. In a way, this isn’t just Cali and Logan’s
story, but a story for anyone that has lost someone close to them before it was
time. It will make you laugh, smile and most definitely cry. 4.5 stars.
“Then go to him,” I say quietly, and now I look up to meet her gaze. Her brown eyes are hard and strong, watching me intently. “Go out with him,” I continue. “Or don’t. But don’t let him go. Because if someone can be constantly on your mind like that, if they can always make you smile, if they can cheer you up one way or another, then you have to go to them. You have to tell them what they mean to you and then you can go out with them or you can stay friends or you can barely ever talk to them, but you enjoy yourself, you have fun, and then you hold fast to them and never, ever let them go. Because if someone, just by their existence, can brighten up your whole day, you have to try like hell to keep them in your life.” I take a long breath as soon as the words finish tumbling out of my mouth, a jumble of thoughts and feelings that, for me, couldn’t be more true. I don’t know where they came from other than straight from that goddamn unpredictable heart of mine, and as soon as the words leave my mouth, I know my subconscious has been working on them for a long time.
