I have to admit, I’m really sick of the “just out of
college, confused girl finds love when she least expects it” genre that seems
to be emerging. I have felt that if
you’ve read one, then you’ve pretty much read them all. BUT, Finding June manages to distinguish
itself in the sea of new adult books with similar plots.
June has just been dumped on a beach in Mexico by her
boyfriend, so she moves back to Boise heartbroken and disillusioned, and gets
her old waitressing job back. What she
doesn’t expect is the attraction she feels for the new guy at work, Reese. Obviously, she fights that attraction. But Reese is determined to explore what is
between them and will wait for June to figure herself out. Can June let her guard down and let Reese in?
I think the best thing about this book is the
characters. Reese is awesome. He’s kind of alpha, but in the best way
possible. He knows what he wants and
goes after it, but he respects June and her search for herself. He’s great and perfect for June. I just really admire male characters in
romance books that treat a woman’s heart with care. He’s a keeper. And June, even in the midst of a life change,
manages to be funny and witty. She does
not go quietly into that goodnight, and I liked that. She’s been hurt, but yet she finds herself
opening up to Reese. Their story just
had an air of reality to it that I appreciated.
I guess at the end of the day I’m not as adverse to the new
adult coming of age story as I thought going in, because I really enjoyed this
book. It’s written well which is what
gives in an edge. The same story may
have been told a million different ways before now, but when it’s told well it
can make it feel like the first time you’ve ever heard of it. That is what makes a book stick out to me, a
unique quality in the writing and characterization where an author truly makes
a story their own. Thanks to the author
for renewing my faith in the NA genre!
