What would you do if you met your soul mate, but you were already married?
In The Good Enough Husband, Sylvie Fox delivers a riveting story about a woman who refuses to let her past define her future.
For years, Hannah Morrison Keesling’s marriage to Michael was good enough. Then she wakes up one morning and it isn’t. Taking her puppy Cody along, Hannah drives north to put distance between herself and her past. Planning to go as far as her SUV will take her, she has to stop on the Lost Coast when her dog gets sick. There she meets small town veterinarian Ben Cooper.
Ben is the man Hannah wishes she had met first. He’s perfect for her, but gun shy because he’s been lied to before and vows not to be betrayed again. Hannah leaves Michael and moves to Ben’s rural town to pursue a future with the man she knows is her soul mate. But Michael won’t let go so easily. Forced to make a decision between the man she chose and the man she loves, Hannah soon realizes that her choices will define everyone else’s consequences.

Oh my. This was a
whopper of a story! Cheating, lies,
confusion…it’s got every negative angle you can imagine in a romance novel
contained within it. I went into it,
perhaps unfairly, preparing not to like it.
And while I may not have loved the characters and their choices, I’m
glad I took a chance and read this book, because it was a good story that helps
to put your own life in perspective.
Hannah is married to Michael. She married him not because she felt he was
the “one” meant for her, but because she was getting to an age where she
thought she should settle down. Now, she
finds herself doubting her choice and decides to get away for a few days to
think things through. She has been
driving for hours when her dog gets sick, so she takes him to the nearest vet,
who happens to be Ben. Hannah discovers
in the course of one night that Ben is, in her estimation, her soul mate. They grow close, and Hannah decides that she
will divorce Michael to be with Ben. The
kicker is that Ben, who has his own issues of trust centered on cheating,
doesn’t know that Hannah is already married.
Things further hit the fan when he does find out. So what will happen? Are Hannah and Ben meant to be, or did Hannah
shoot herself in the foot in her journey of self-discovery?
I’ll start with Hannah.
Oh jeebus…Hannah. I kind of
understood where she was coming from, but she has got to be the flakiest and
most self-absorbed person in the world.
I tried hard to like her and look past her poor decision making to find some
semblance of a good person in her, but I’m still not convinced that she has a
shred of decency in her. Sure, she was a
bit misguided and confused, but that doesn’t excuse her treatment of the men in
her life and the blatant dishonesty and deception she perpetrates upon
them. I can’t believe she let things get
as far with Ben as they did, actually.
Wowza…I did not like her. But, I
do applaud the author for presenting a character that is so easy to dislike as
the protagonist in the book, because even though I had a hard time liking
Hannah, I was still engrossed in her story.
Ben and Michael I just felt sorry for. They’re both good men who got caught up in
something that they didn’t realize would end like it did. Ben, especially, was a really upstanding and
ethical guy who had been through the emotional wringer a few times in his
life. I felt for him. Hannah, in her inner monologue, tries to
vilify them, but she just comes off as a whiney jerk in doing so. Their only problem, as far as I can see, is
her.
Overall, this was a good book. I think it may turn off some people because
of the cheating and the lying, but I think you’d be selling yourself short if
you didn’t give it a try. My only
complaint is that the ending felt rushed; actually, it felt more than rushed,
it felt cut off. I’m not sure I really
understood the ending of the book.
However, it surprised me; it was unexpected and I read so many books,
it’s hard to surprise me! I give this
book 3.5 stars.
I write the kinds of books I love to read. The quirky characters in my
romance novels experience passion, angst, and conflict, but always get
their "happily ever after." I live in Los Angeles with my husband, son,
and a handful of rescued pets. When I'm not hanging out in Hollywood,
I'm eating my way through Budapest.
