I’m a sucker for the cage fighter story.  It’s a new genre that I quite enjoy.  This story appeared to have a mafia twist, so my interest was piqued.
Nicky is the son of a mafia kingpin who wants him to take over the “family” business.  The problem is, while Nicky doesn’t want anyone else to run his family he doesn’t really want to do it either.  He only really feels at home in the cage; everywhere else he feels out of control. He meets Jackie quite by accident and they fall hard for each other.  This makes a complicated situation for Nicky much more complicated. Does he have what it takes to fight for what he wants outside the cage as well as within?
This was a very quick read; I finished it in less than a day.  I’m a fan of the slow burn/build in the central relationship.  However, the relationship between Nicky and Jackie went at warp speed.  It really didn’t work very well for me at all.  I mean, there were some hot times between the two and those were done great, but it was so fast I had a hard time understanding their desire for each other and what it was grounded in.
Also, for a story that sounds like underground cage fighting is central to the story, I just thought there would be more of it. There seemed to be not a lot of cage fighting for a cage fighting book.
I really did like the mafia aspect to this story, though.  It was a twist that made this love story atypical.  It’s a gritty story that has some very edgy elements to it and I found it to be an interesting read despite the few things I mentioned above.  This is the first book I’ve read from this author and I would definitely check out other books in the future.  3.5 stars.

I fell in love with this synopsis. It really got me. Then I started reading and. It fell short for me, which I really tried not to let happen.

I wanted to love Nick for his determination to stay out of the mafia even though that's where his family wants him. He's a fighter with a soft heart really. He really was great, in the cage and his background and development. But the love part of the book, just didn't work for me and the fact that he fell for our heroine so quickly.

Then we have Jackie, the no nonsense, biker chick with a ex gangbanger boyfriend. She was almost a side character to me. We really got to know Nick and his story and then Jackie was just sort of there for me. I wish we'd gotten to know more about the characters before they 'fell in love' and then things were going super quick for them.

I think there was potential but it just didn't quite live up to what I was hoping for.
