Wow, this
book started out rather long winded and boring to me since I had already read
the other book in this series, but I understand why the author needed to go
back and refresh or update a new reader about the history of this story though.
The information not only helped a new reader connect to the importance of Liz’s
mission, it made the ending even more priceless. Just a brief
update, we are in the year 2070’s of the world’s time frame and there are
groups fighting for the power to control everyone who is still alive. For
the Nomad’s they just want the freedom to love freely and live life to the
fullest, while the Company wants to forbid sex for homosexuals, only using the
practice of sex for creating more humans for their army. The war has gone
on for years and with no end in sight, we are drawn now to the story of Linc
Cutler and Liz Grant.
Liz lives
with the deep need to find out who killed her father years ago. He was a
brilliant man who did research for the Company. While she grew up
believing her father was killed by the Nomads, she is going to face the truth
now after she has defected from her post and become friends with the same
people she grew up believing were her enemies. Liz is willing to risk her
life to infiltrate back into the Beta Corps so she can get the answers
regarding her father’s death, but she wasn’t prepared to fall for Linc Cutler,
the commander of Beta Corps.
Linc is
on a mission to carry out his father’s wishes. We don’t fully learn what
those missions are till the end of the book but we know they are sinister and
it is difficult for he and Liz to find a common ground based on truth. We
watch as their hot and steamy love for each other begins to not only build but
ignite a process that will either bond them together forever or tear them
apart, breaking them to the point of no recovery. We get to see more of Nate
who is Linc’s brother and in the In His Command and how far Nate is willing to
go for the love of his family.
I was
flipping through the pages as fast as I could when we were at the point of
seeing Linc’s father for who he is. I had questioned through most of the
book if his father was an upstanding man fighting for what he believed was best
for his people or the selfish man that would hold the key to all of Liz’s
pain. I am happy to say my guess was correct but wow when the time came I
was on the edge of my seat. Not only were the curtains pulled back on
Cutler, we also found out what kind of man Liz’s father really was.
Getting to the truth was a roller coaster ride in itself during the last 1/3 of
the book. Just as I thought I had it figured out, a plot twist would
happen making me question my true feelings about Linc.
There is
a lot of action in this book that I didn’t mention because it can be rather
confusing if you are only hearing pieces of it, but the author does a great job
at weaving it together for you to follow. I love this whole series.
The beginning book was more M/M focused because that was an important part of the
story for the Nomads, this one was centered on Linc and Liz and their hot
passion and determination for truth and justice. The author’s constant
message through this series is find what you are willing to stand up for and
then fight to protect it. After reading the small clip for the next book Under
His Guard, I can hardly wait to see what is going to happen next.
“I should’ve said it before, but you look incredible in uniform.
Fuck, you look great out of it.” I opened my eyes to his boyish grin sliding
into something more rakish, obviously remembering me in nothing but a bra and
panties. “But I like this side of you too, all woman.”
“Linc.” The spicy scent of his cologne and the closeness of his
large, muscled body catapulted deep craving through me.
Eyes deep and blue lowered to my lips. “Are my advances unwelcome?”
His words ran hot strips across my vulnerable flesh.
“No.” I yielded to him in surprise, delight, desire when his tongue
stroked his bottom lip before he tucked his teeth into the pink flesh I wanted.
“Let me kiss you?”
“Yes.”
A short curse and hungry groan later, Linc curled his hands around
my shoulders, moved into my hair, and slanted my mouth to his. Firm and moist,
his lips tasted mine. Slow and tender, he plucked at me until I reached around
his back, spanning my hands across the width of muscle.
He asked for no quarter, easing his tongue into my mouth. What
started out hesitant became a wild, slippery tangle, our hands grasping, mouths
gasping.
Savoring the last licks of his lips, pressing for more, I listened
to his growl. “You are tying me into knots, Liz.”
I cupped his face, sucking his full mouth, tonguing inside one last
time.
Hands running up my thighs, he shook his head when he found my
party favor strapped there. “Always packing.”
I dragged my palm down his chest to his trousers, lighting on the
thick roll of his erection that jerked beneath my fingers. “So are you.”
Another passionate kiss passed between us, barely there touches
promising so much more. It was public; it was a turn-on…yet it felt totally
private. I took everything Linc gave, desperate for more, my body surrendering to
his. When his thigh parted mine, I rode against his leg, so swollen, so ready
for him.
“We have to stop.”
I blinked up at him.
Lips red from our kisses and his cheeks flushed, he grunted.
“Goddamn, Liz. We have to stop. I won’t do this here, in front of them.”
The reminder of where we were and why we were kissing was like a
bucket of cold water dumped over my head. My pride stung as I withdrew from his
embrace. “Maybe you won’t do me at all.”
Our terse whispered exchange didn’t go unnoticed by Cutler. I hoped
our intimate kiss and Linc’s testament about my active duty convinced him I
wasn’t working for anyone but the Corps and that I was one hundred percent for
the CO.
Linc’s expletive was low he as took my elbow. Threading us through
the throng, he swiftly made our good nights. “I just saved you from another
grilling from my father. You owe me.”
Anger spiked in me. “What did you get out of it?”
He stopped and stared at me before dropping his gaze. “A kiss from
you.”
His quiet admission affected me nearly as much as his lips on mine
had earlier, but that wasn’t the answer I was looking for. “Why would you help
me get into Cutler’s good graces?”
“Ah, now that, that is because I am my father’s son and I want to
stay one step ahead of him. You’re a high commodity, whether you’re a true
soldier or a traitor, and for the moment, you’re mine. I plan to keep it that
way.”
Slinging the fur over my shoulders, he helped me into the Cruiser. Seated
beside me, he sent Ginger in motion. “The next time we kiss, Liz, it won’t be
in front of an audience, and it won’t be an act.” His whispered words were warm
against my ear.
It hadn’t been an act at all, at least not to me. A ball of fire
inflamed my sex. A ball of fear rolled around my head. Linc’s magnetism was the
focal point of it all.
