I have to admit, I was really glad that this author started a new
series. I was beginning to feel the old
series being a little overdone and enjoying each installment less than the
previous one for the most part. With
this new book in the #hashtag series, consider my fangirldom renewed.
Rimmel is a girl at college on a scholarship. She is not in the “in” crowd. She is tasked with tutoring Romeo, the school
quarterback. She needs to tutor him in
order to keep her scholarship; he needs to be tutored in order to keep
playing. They don’t want each other, but
they need each other. When they develop
a friendship, the story really takes off.
But when Romeo is tasked in secret by his fraternity to use Rimmel in
some way, it gets complicated. At its core,
it’s a story about social norms. Can you
cross the boundaries of your social group to find love? Should you?
This book had the potential to be like a lot of books already out
there. I mean, we’ve heard this story
before…nerd meets jock and falls in love.
But the author did a great job of updating this story with the idea of
the hashtags in this book and the #buzzfeed (campus gossip) at the beginning of
every chapter. It can be a bit juvenile,
but we are talking about college age people here, so I guess that is
acceptable.
I thought the characters were really great in this story too. What I really, really liked was that the characters,
especially Rimmel, didn’t have to go through some dramatic change in order to
get the guy. She was just who she was
and that was good enough. I think that’s
a great message for girls/women that is missing from a lot of books in this
genre. Granted, Rimmel and Romeo have
their ups and downs, and there are duplicitous activities because there has to
be some kind of drama, but the story flowed well and I thought that seeing both
of their perspectives really added to the story.
Overall, I’m excited about this series and enjoyed this book very
much. I can’t wait to read the next
book! 4 stars.
