Rome Tour Stop!!

Cora Lewis is a whole lot of fun, and she knows how to keep her tattooed bad boy friends in line. But all that flash and sass hide the fact that she’s never gotten over the way her first love broke her heart. Now she has a plan to make sure that never happens again: She’s only going to fall in love with someone perfect.
Rome Archer is as far from perfect as a man can be. He’s stubborn and rigid, he’s bossy and has come back from his final tour of duty fundamentally broken. Rome’s used to filling a role: big brother, doting son, super soldier; and now none of these fit anymore. Now he’s just a man trying to figure out what to do with the rest of his life while keeping the demons of war and loss at bay. He would have been glad to suffer it alone, until Cora comes sweeping into his life and becomes the only color on his bleak horizon.
Perfect isn’t in the cards for these two, but imperfect might just last forever . . .

I really liked the other two books in this series.  “Rule” and “Jet” were very solid 4 plus star reads for me.  I was super excited to hear Rome’s story.  However, after finishing this book over a week ago I’m writing this review with some mixed feelings.  Did I like the book?  Yes?  Was it everything I was expecting?  No.
Rome Archer has been is a combat vet.  He’s come home and is feeling completely lost.  Obviously suffering from PTSD, as well as some serious family drama, he’s not himself.  He’s having some major personal crises, when he meets Cora (aka Tink).  A tiny, colorful bombshell that doesn’t take crap from anyone, she works with Rule and the boys at the tattoo parlor.  She sees the way Rome is acting towards the people that she loves and cares about and confronts him.  That mutual disgust morphs into attraction, and they end up in bed together.  When they are thrust into unforeseen (but not totally avoidable) circumstances, can they make it work when it’s obvious that Rome, and to a lesser extent Cora, have so much to work through?
I guess my major complaint about this book was the two main characters.  We meet them in the other two books, but when I got to know them in this one, I neither understood their motivations nor their attraction to one another.  I guess for me the relationship just wasn’t believable.  I think all of the other stuff they deal with like the PTSD, family drama and personal demons are all totally believable, but the entire story rests upon the relationship between Cora and Rome and I just didn’t get it.  And I don’t want to ruin anything, but in a couple of instances I was thinking “Who on earth would forget THAT???”  When you read it, you’ll know what I’m talking about.  There was just no passion, no spark there for me when it came to Rome and Cora.
Anyway, I didn’t dislike this book at all, I guess maybe it just didn’t meet my expectations, and I’m having a hard time deciding whether my expectations were overinflated or not.  It is very possible that many people will read and LOVE this book as they have the others.  But for me, it just didn’t quite click.  I wanted to get it and be enveloped and entrance by the story, but I honestly struggled to finish.  The plot just seemed very predictable, on several fronts.  I really hate to do it, but I’m only giving this one 3.5 stars.  But you know I’ll read “Nash” when it comes out!

I’m supposed to share interesting details about myself so that my readers get to know me so here we go in no particular order: I’m an natural redhead even though I haven’t seen my real hair color in years, I’m a big fan of tattoos and have a half sleeve on either arm and various other pieces all over the place, I’ve been in the bar industry since I was in college and it has always offered interesting insight into how men and women interact with each other, I have 3 dogs that are all crazy, I live in Colorado and love the snow, I love music and in all reality wish I could be a rock star not a writer or a bartender but I have zero talent so there is that. I love to write, love to read and all I’m interested in is a good story with interesting characters that make the reader feel something.
