Well, well, well…another MC book?  The market is so flooded with these.  But I’ll let you in on a secret: the market would be better if it were flooded by MC books like this one.
Dani, in one swoop, discovers secrets that her mother has kept from her.  She’s had a bit of a rough life, thanks to her mother who is controlling and a little crazy.  One night, she is woken in the middle of the night and told she needs to leave.  It is then that she is introduced to her father, the President of the Devil’s MC. It’s not the most pleasant family reunion, seeing as how her father didn’t know of her existence, but when she meets MC member Shadow she realizes that maybe this life is for her.  Problem is the number one rule of the MC is not to mess with the President’s daughter, even if he didn’t know she existed.  But the attraction between Dani and Shadow can’t be denied.  Will their relationship survive not only the breaking of the club’s rules, but the secrets that will be revealed?
My, oh my…now this is a MC romance.  It is extremely well written.  I loved the plot twists, the characters, and the whole shebang!  Shadow is everything you want a biker hero to be: sexy, but dirty.  He will get you dirty, he will make you dirty, but you will love every second of it.  Dani is a great match for him in spunkiness.  She’s been through a lot, but still manages to not be too hard to the world.  The chemistry between Dani and Shadow is off the charts!  You all know how I love me some slow building chemistry and this book definitely has it.
I was also really impressed by the overall plot.  There were a couple twists and turns in there that I did not expect.  Plus, the big secret that Dani’s mom has been holding on to is mind-blowing!  It’s got some serious ramifications for not only the MC, but Dani as well.  Wow…it was a doozy!
Overall I really enjoyed this book.  It was a good incarnation of the MC romance.  Just dirty enough to really be MC but character driven and wrapped together in a great plot that made it a good read.  4.5 stars!

CLIFFHANGER ALERT!!! Yes, I realize this is the first book in the series, but I was not prepared for the cliff the author left me dangling from and it’s a doozy. It has been a while since I’ve had a WTF moment when reading and the final chapter of What Doesn’t Destroy Us is a definite WTF ending, but the good kind that leaves you salivating for the next book.

As for the rest of the book, that too was hard for me to rate. There is a line in the book when Dani introspectively reflects “My body and mind are making me feel bipolar.” This made me snort and ask the book – out loud – how do you think I feel? I spent almost the first half of the book dizzy from Dani going back and forth regarding her feelings and reactions toward Shadow. I had to remind myself constantly that she was only 21 and her mother suffocated her to the point of extreme naivety. Admittedly, Shadow had his own ping pong game of emotions going on regarding Dani, but her being the MC President’s daughter I got it and it wasn’t nearly as erratic. So needless to say, I was RELIEVED when the two finally faced facts and decided to try things out and boy howdy, do they try things out. Whew! The sex is stellar. Shadow is all alpha male and gritty biker who taps into Dani’s unexpected wild side in bed. I would say she was definitely making up for being suffocated by her mother all those years. After the mid-way point of the book, I found Dani’s character much more enjoyable and I became invested in her; I especially enjoyed the laughing at her getting drunk for the first time and that scene alone wiped away all of the lingering dizziness I felt from the first half of the book.

What Doesn’t Destroy Us is an MC book so it has the expected male-dominated world in which women are property, so if that kind of thinking bothers you, this isn’t the book for you. But if you can enjoy a well-written MC book, then grab it because in addition to all of the relationship angst going on between Shadow and Dani, there is a whole host of action and suspense going on that will keep you entertained and make up for the insanity that is Dani in the first half of the book.
