Bashful Karma Mason has been too concerned with college—and now work—to embrace her sexuality. Bullied as a child, she hides behind an unremarkable wardrobe and relegates herself to the shadows. But when her best friend convinces her to attend a charity benefit in Chicago wearing a stunning red dress that catches the eye of every man in the room, she discovers a surprising side to her personality. One that adores the spotlight but has no idea how to handle the attention.
Mark Strong, a wealthy Chicago businessman, is brimming with confidence. He’s in total control. Nothing—and no one—escapes his notice. However, Mark carries a heavy, painful burden. After finding his fiancée with another man six years ago, he’s erected a fortress around his heart, unwilling to let himself fall in love again. But when enchanting Karma snares his gaze from across the room, he has no idea she will shatter his carefully ordered life.
What starts out as a casual flirtation takes a series of surprising turns as Mark and Karma embark on a sensual journey destined by fate. Mark is driven to know Karma, understand her…educate her, and Karma is his willing student, eager to experience the pleasure he promises. But when the student becomes the teacher, Mark has to make a choice between taking another chance on love or a future alone.
This was a surprisingly heartfelt read by an author that is new to me.
At first glance it seems like a familiar plot about a wallflower and a rich man
who doesn’t “do” relationships. I was
pleasantly surprised to find it was deeper than that.
Karma is a girl who has a past filled with bullying. As a result, she never has come out of her
shell. Even as an adult she immersed
herself in school and now work, and kept out of the social sphere. Her best
friend needs a date for a social event, and for one night Karma gets to play
Cinderella at the ball. And she attracts
the eye of every man in the room, including Mark. He sets her at ease, and when she ends up
back in his hotel room she freaks out a bit and leaves. Mark has trouble forgetting Karma, and is
pleasantly surprised when he finds on Monday morning that he will be working
with her by contract. This is the perfect arrangement for Mark to continue to
pursue Karma. The real question is will
they both be able to shed their pasts and see what they could have together?
It seems like a classic storyline, I know. But where this book separates itself is by
the writing and the characters. The plot
unfolds at a nice pace. It’s believable
to a degree, and for me in contemporary romance that is a must. I believed the
chemistry and the connection between them.
And I think they both had pasts that are experienced by a lot of
people. It was easy to connect to them
on that level as well.
This is a really sensual book as well, I felt. Not just sexy, but sensual. To me, there’s a big difference. It was just sex for the sake of sex; it was
sex that connected two people. There are
also some moments that made me blush, and let me tell you, that’s hard to do!
Overall, I really enjoyed this book.
It was far above average for me in this genre, and I can’t wait for the
next installment in the series. 4.5
stars!
