Break Out by Nina Croft

The year is 3048, Earth is no longer habitable, and man has fled to the stars where they’ve discovered the secret of immortality—Meridian. Unfortunately, the radioactive mineral is exorbitantly expensive and only available to a select few. A new class comprised of the super rich and immortal soon evolves. The Collective, as they’re called, rule the universe.

Two-thousand-year-old Ricardo Sanchez, vampire and rogue pilot of the space cruiser, El Cazador, can’t resist two things: gorgeous women and impossible jobs. When beautiful Skylar Rossaria approaches him to break a prisoner out of the Collective’s maximum security prison on Trakis One, Rico jumps at the chance. Being hunted by the Collective has never been so dangerous–or so fun!

Vampires, genetically altered human beings, galactic spaceship pursuits, pirates, action, romance and sexual tension. This book has all the makings for a great storyline. I enjoyed Breakout it reminded me of two of my all time favorite sci-fi TV shows, Firefly and Farscape, but with a rogue sexy Vampire born in the 15th Century to spice things up. The storyline was fast paced and the characters were entertaining, snarky, mysterious and likeable. Even the over sexed lazy Alpha male Vampire Ricardo had me wanting to join the mixed matched crew of the El Cazador.

It’s the year 3048 and humanity has taken up residence in outer space. Humans have discovered a radioactive mineral that produces the effect of immortality upon the user. The catch is that the material is difficult to obtain and extremely expensive which means it’s mainly the elite super rich who have access to the treatments. Those with ever lasting life are known as the Collective and they have taken control over the universe. The Collective isn’t the only group wielding power over the universe. A religious fanatical group known as the Church is attempting to eradicate altered humans from existence. Many of those standing against the Church and the Collective have formed a group known as the Rebels. One of the members of the Rebels managed to take out a high member of the Church.

Skylar Rossaria an elite military intelligence officer within the Collective has been tasked with the impossible mission of helping that Rebel escape from the deadliest and tightest maximum-security prison in the universe. In order to complete her mission she needs a disposable crew with the ability and the means to help her. After careful research she sets her sights on the pirate crew of the El Cazador. Skylar uses her feminine charm, a convincing cover, and loads of financial credit to lure them in but her mission doesn’t go as smoothly as she anticipated. She finds herself overwhelmingly attracted to the Rogue Vampire Rico and she’s developing friendly feelings toward the rest of the El Cazador crew. Will her lust and emotions get in the way of her mission? Will the crew discover her true identity and kill her? And why does the Collective want her to release a Rebel prisoner?

If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush with some sexy space times and gripping storytelling, jump onto the El Cazador and enjoy the crazy ride in space. I can’t wait to read the next books and find out more about some of the secondary characters.
