Special Agent Finnegan by Mimi Barbour

When Special Agent Finnegan O'Reilly gets shot, and the news brings on his father’s heart attack, he decides to cut out the undercover assignments for a while. The O'Reilly has suffered enough and Finn can’t be the cause of more. Then his boss forces him to take on one more case. Playing a role right in their own pub to expose the serial, suicide killers rampaging New York City, he’s to be their next target. His part – to be a married man who cheats on his wife – seems more like real life than playacting.

Renée Knight has no scruples when on the job as a New York City cop. Her disguises have become a permanent fixture in her life, and no one really knows her except for the father she loves fiercely. The man whose suicide she doesn't accept nor will she leave alone. If it means going undercover in a pub where the killers hang out, she’s their girl. If it means playing the wife of the pub owner, no problem. But they never intended for her to fall for this guy, she does this all on her own. Now she has to hire the killers to arrange his suicide. And catch them before they carry it out.
Oh what a fun book! I loved the characters in this book and I hope we can have whole series with them they are just that amazing!  This is the first book I have read by Ms. Barbour and I was completely taken aback by how real her characters were.

One of the best examples of her genius with characters is, The O’Reilly, he was the perfect comedic relief his Irish brogue and charm were the perfect offset to the tension and drama created by Renee and Finn’s jobs.  While he provided his comedic relief he still managed to be a loving father and serve an integral part in the end of the book.

This book had a perfect balance of heart-string pulling, romance, drama and suspense.  I really enjoyed being able to watch Renee deal with her grief and let Finn help her heal and finally accept herself as she is without needing any disguises.

I would really love to read another story with these characters because I just feel like I know them so well already and I don’t want to let them go. Overall this was a wonderful book and I can’t wait to read more by this author.
