Collision Tour Stop!

When eighteen-year-old Kara Jones gets into a car accident on the way home from college, she’s left with more than a few bruised ribs, a busted cell phone, and a totaled car. After a slip-up at the hospital, she’s shaken to discover that her family isn’t all it seems. And now her mother’s strange behavior and willingness to do anything to protect her secrets—including pulling Kara out of school—have Kara floundering in the dark.

Enter Derek Miller, a former classmate who’s dealing with family issues of his own. His nerdy charm is too much for Kara to resist, and she’s even more amazed when he agrees to help her dig into her mother’s past. Together they investigate her mother’s old friends and boyfriends, hoping to discover who Kara really is. Instead, they find disturbing connections to the dark history of Kent State University, and an ever expanding maze of mystery surrounding Kara’s birth.

As Kara and Derek chase secrets, she realizes he’s the only person she can trust. But as they get closer to the truth, the disturbing answers reveal a web of evil far darker and further reaching then they’d imagined, leaving Kara to wish she’d never asked the questions in the first place, and to wonder if some secrets are better left untold…

Some secrets are meant to stay silent.  The truth will not always set you free.  Many mistakes are better not faced.  These are the statements that were thrown at Kara after a car accident that she might have been wise to accept.  Having a troubled relationship with her mom, she grew up being a daddy’s girl.  She behaved like him, thought like him and was proud to be his little girl.  One night in the ER changed her life, destroyed her past as she knew it and made her future nothing but a mangled maze that she didn’t have a clue how to get through.
The secret was out, but now the truthful answers were being kept from her.  After needing to get away from her mother she ran out of the house, still battered and bruised from the accident and came across Derek, a nerdy boy from high school that use to stare at her thong during class.  Derek isn’t a nerd now; he has turned himself into a sexy man with issues of his own.  On his own now and living life one day at a time, he has wounds that only Kara can heal, but during that healing process he is determined to help her find the answers she is searching for.
Digging up her parents past was long and confusing, but after a number of leads they finally find the truth.  This is when Kara realizes the truth doesn’t always set you free, sometimes it puts you in a prison and chains you to insanity.  Coming face to face with the demon she should run from she thinks it is over.  Then we read the epilogue and discover this prison term has just begun for her.  This does end in a cliff hanger but not one that will leave you crumbled on the ground screaming why.  I need more of this story and the wait will be difficult but at least I am not shattered by the events, I am more intrigued.
Growing up in my home state during the 70’s till now, this story hit close to home for me.  I can’t explain or I will be giving away the plot, but I can verify the author nailed the fear and confusion in the characters.  My heart broke all over again for Kara as she discovered the truth and the fear and suspicion from society is very real in this book.  While reading I could flash back to a time not so long ago when similar events happen here and could feel the emotions welling inside of me once again.
I give this author huge credit for capturing emotions that most can’t describe and giving them a voice in this story.  She painted the picture that took you inside those walls Kara found herself in, and the job of her mother to protect her at all costs, even if that meant she would lose her daughter in the end.  I highly recommend this book and I will be anticipating the next one in this series.
