in Shadows was
a great book. When I pulled up the blurb this morning before I started reading
it, I just skimmed over the first couple of paragraphs quickly and completely
missed the “sinister events” part, so I didn’t realize that this was a romantic
suspense novel. And let me tell you, I didn’t figure out “who done it” until it
was revealed at the end and I so did not see it coming.
The book opens on a highly emotional
scene when Kay catches her fiancé in a compromising position with his ex.
Completely devastated, she flees to her best friend’s home and ends up
accompanying her and her boyfriend Matt to a sex club, where she proceeds to
have one night of complete sexual bliss with an unknown stranger. For many
people visiting a sex club or a one-night stand wouldn’t be an issue, but Kay is
an heiress and the face of her family’s philanthropic foundation so if it got
out that she had visited a sex club, she’d be destroyed. So as much as she
enjoyed her time with Mr. Pumpernickel (you’ll understand the reference when
you read the book), she knows she can’t try to find out who he was or return to
the club. Unfortunately, there was a murder the night she was at the club and
Mr. Pumpernickel is arrested for it. This presents a major problem for Kay as
she had discovered who Mr. P was and, after spending time with him, had
developed feelings for him and couldn’t figure out what to do. Kay finds
herself trying to juggle her responsibility with the Foundation, her parents’
expectation that she still marry Josh despite his infidelity, Josh’s continued
pursuit and machinations, and her feelings for Mr. Pumpernickel and his need
for an alibi.
Ms. Eugene has written an excellent
book that sucked me in from the first sentence. The characters are realistic.
The romance was wonderful. The twists and turns were suspenseful. The sex
scenes were HOT!!! I so want my own Mr. Pumpernickel. I will definitely be
checking out Ms. Eugene’s other books as I found her writing to be quite
enjoyable.
