His Client (His Client #1) by Ava March

Love wasn't supposed to be part of the bargain…

On every visit to Madame Delacroix’s brothel, Nathaniel Travers requests the same man. Stunningly handsome and highly skilled, Jasper not only shares Nate’s fondness for wickedly erotic games and black leather corsets, but he has become a trusted confidant. And Jasper’s the only person who knows Nate longs for a committed relationship with his childhood friend, Peter Edmonton.

Unrequited love hurts, but it hurts even more when the object of affection is in love with another. Jasper Reed has been working at Delacroix’s for a decade. He’s saved enough to retire, yet he remains at the decadent London brothel. Leaving would mean leaving Nate and the hope someday the rugged gentleman would stop pining for his best friend and realize he loves Jasper, just as Jasper loves him.

Edmonton’s impending marriage looms before them, causing Jasper to take another look at his stubborn heart. Yet Jasper’s a bastard whore, and Nate’s the nephew of a viscount. Surely there can’t be any hope for them…

Oh man, I love it when historicals are extra hot, include toys, cross dressing – yum! And I really loved the client. Set in England, 1822, the story opens with Jasper works at a brothel. The management prefers that he and the couple other men who are available to clients who have ‘different’ tastes, aren’t spotted by the wrong eyes since sodomy is against the law. Jasper has been seeing client Nate for about five years and his growing attraction to the masculine, but not classically handsome man, has grown into love. What Jasper doesn’t know is that Nate finds Jasper very handsome and despite his childhood love for his straight best friend, has something special sexually with Jasper. Boy, does he ever.

The first time Jasper and Nate meet up in The Client, Nate is devastated that his best friend is getting married the next day. But some role playing where Jasper is an innocent virgin dressed in a sheer shift quickly brightens Nate’s mood. Then of course, there was the marble butt plug. I pretty much knew I was going to love the book from that moment on!

Don’t worry though – this isn’t just about the sex. There’s a very sweet love story between the two men as they work through their hidden feelings and societal challenges. In addition, the writing is excellent and the historical feel is accurate –speech and setting - but not overdone. As a matter of fact, if you typically shy away from historicals, but like roleplaying and some kink – I would definitely give this one a try.

I also really loved these characters and I loved them together. They had amazing chemistry. I think it’s because the story begins with the fact that these two men have a history together – they didn’t just meet – but the romance isn’t there yet either. Jasper has become Nate’s confidant, not just his paid whore. I really felt the affinity they had for each other.

Overall, a great read from all angles, loved it and would definitely re-read this one and check out more from this author. This rates an enthusiastic 5 lizard claws!
